WAIKOKO, HI : Waikoko traffic crashes cause highway closure on Saturday, 3rd September 2016
Police were notified of a vehicle that drove off Kuhio Highway in Waikoko, on the island’s North Shore, about 7 a.m. Saturday.
Police discovered that a red Kia minivan had veered of the northbound lane of the highway and landed on a utility pole guide wire, which kept the vehicle from driving off the cliff. Responding officers closed the highway in both directions ab out 8 a.m. to allow a crew from Kauai Island Utility Cooperative to repair a downed power line caused by the crash.
Once on scene, police also located a Jeep SUV that appeared to have driven off the highway and landed in the rocky shoreline below, roughly 200 yards from the Kia crash site.
It is unknown when the Jeep’s crash occurred, but it is unrelated to the crash involving the Kia, police said.
There were no occupants in the Jeep when officers arrived on scene, but the owner later made contact with police. No injuries were reported and no property damage was caused by the Jeep’s crash.
There were also no occupants in the Kia when police responded. However, the driver was later located and cited for not having insurance and for leaving a scene of a crash that resulted in property damage.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene and Kuhio Highway remained closed while crews worked to clear the roadway. The highway was reopened about 10:40 a.m.
