Child, man injured on SR-16 crash in Lewis Speedway

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a serious crash on State Road 16 in the area of Lewis Speedway. Sgt. Dylan Bryan with FHP said two SUVs struck each other head-on around 10 p.m. Friday.

Sgt. Bryan said an SUV was traveling east on SR-16 at a high speed when it hit a curb, lost control and crossed over into oncoming traffic.

Two occupants in that SUV, a man and a child in a car seat, have been airlifted to UF Health in Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries. The child has a large laceration at the front of her head, according to Sgt. Bryan.

He said alcohol is considered to be a factor in this crash.

There were four passengers in the other SUV. The two passengers in the front seat have serious, but not life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Bryan. The other two were uninjured.

SR 16 is blocked in both directions at Masters Drive at this time.
