Corona, CA : Off-duty San Bernardino police officer killed in crash on the 91 Freeway in Corona on Thursday morning, May 1st 2014

An off-duty police officer was killed in an accident on the westbound 91 Freeway in Corona on Thursday morning.

The incident happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. at Main Street. Authorities say the officer was traveling on his personal motorcycle in the carpool lane. According to the California Highway Patrol, a vehicle merged at a point where it was legal to do so, but somehow collided with the officer. His body was thrown over the center divider into the path of a car traveling eastbound.

The officer was identified as 30-year-old Shaun Jarvis, an eight-year veteran of the San Bernardino Police Department.

Jarvis' body was draped with a California flag, a gesture of respect for his role in providing community safety. Fellow officers escorted his body from the accident scene.

"It was hard to see him. I went to the scene. It's hard to see him like that because I do remember him joking in the office. He was a great guy," said Lt. Rich Lawhead, who recruited Jarvis.

Jarvis joined the San Bernardino Police Department on June 19, 2006, and was a "highly respected officer," the police department said in a statement. He worked the traffic division and was recently awarded his motor officer insignia.

The officer is survived by his wife Rachel and their children. Funeral arrangements are pending, police said.

Both sides of 91 Freeway were briefly closed due to the investigation. All lanes reopened just before 11 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
