A New York woman was sent to the hospital with a back injury after crashing a moped on Monday, said Fire Chief Steve Achilles. The crash was reported at 12:25 p.m. when the woman hit a curb with the moped at the intersection of Islington and Bridge Streets. Achilles said the 20-year-old woman hit a curb while taking the corner at a low speed and was thrown from the moped. He said she was wearing a helmet and complained of back pain. Emergency medical technicians immobilized the woman and transported her by ambulance to the hospital, he said. The fire chief said the fact that she was wearing a helmet was “a big deal,” because even at low speeds, a crash like that could result in a serious head injury.
