Orlando, FL : Two people injured in Street-racing crash near Columbia Street and Crooms Avenue on Sunday, November 30, 2014
Two people racing each other in an Orlando neighborhood are now in the hospital, police said.
The two were street racing near Columbia Street and Crooms Avenue when they crashed into one another.
Parts of the mangled cars were strewn across residents’ yards just after 3 a.m. Sunday.
Neighbors said they heard tires screeching right before the crash.
The cars traveled through a wall and were feet away from hitting a home.
Both cars overturned and two drivers were ejected.
Columbia Street was shut down for hours as investigators worked to find out the cause of the crash.
Residents said they worry for their safety when people speed through the neighborhood because homes and community centers line both sides of the street.
“I mean, we have an elementary school right here on the other side of these houses. Kids walk up and down every day,” resident Mariah Turner said. "There are people walking everywhere."
Police said both drivers are in critical condition.
There were no injuries to any pedestrians or residents.
In October, Channel 9 reported that more than 100 vehicles parked along Rocket Boulevard near Central Florida Parkway scattered when troopers busted a street race.
Residents said they fear crackdowns on illegal racing could push more racers to race in residential areas.
