Phoenix, AZ : 1 dead, 2 injured after a crash in Phoenix on Tuesday, March 7, 2017
A fatal crash at a Phoenix intersection was triggered by a vehicle that was driving at an estimated speed of 100 mph, according to Phoenix police.
Officers at the scene said a black Pontiac raced through a red light on 27th Avenue at around 100 mph and clipped a car that was in the intersection at McDowell Road waiting to turn left. The Pontiac lost control, swerved into oncoming traffic and collided almost head-on with a red truck, said Phoenix police Sgt. Jonathan Howard.
The driver of the Pontiac died at the scene of the accident. Two people have been taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, one person from each car, according to Howard.
The employees of the Tufesa bus station on 27th Avenue and McDowell Road witnessed the crash and rushed out to help those involved in the car accident. They brought out water and fire extinguishers trying to put out the fire that caught on the truck involved.
"It's unusual to see an accident of this significance occur during the day," Howard said, adding that the crash occurred at about 10:40 a.m.
The intersection was expected to be closed for most of the afternoon but reopened before the evening rush.
