Sophia, NC : Two Kickback Jack’s employees die in one-vehicle accident in northwestern Randolph County early Monday, May 23, 2016

A man and woman were killed when their car ran off a roadway and struck several trees in northwestern Randolph County early Monday.

Dustin Wheeler, 31, and Melissa Reynolds, 37, both of Plainfield Road, Sophia, were westbound at about 2:45 a.m. on Plainfield Road, less than .2 of a mile from home, in a 2000 Acura that Wheeler was driving, said Trooper Jed Frye of the N.C. Highway Patrol. The car swerved, traveled left of center and ran off the road. It struck an embankment, went airborne and struck several trees before coming to rest in a tree.

Wheeler and Reynolds were not wearing seat belts. Frye reported that speed was a factor and estimated the car was traveling 70-75 mph at the time of the crash.

Reynolds was a server and Wheeler, her boyfriend, was a cook at Kickback Jack’s on Dixie Drive in Asheboro, said Christian Duty, one of the managers. They had been working at the sports bar for about a year, he said, after moving from Myrtle Beach to Randolph County to be closer to her family.

“They were two of our best,” Duty said Monday. “Melissa was always smiling and laughing, full of life. It sounds cliche, but it’s true. The guests loved her. We loved her. She was a professional … He was well-liked and had moved ahead in our kitchen faster than a lot of others.”

Duty said the mood at Kickback Jack’s was somber. “It’s going to be a tough few days,” he said.
