Atlanta, GA : One person dead after a fiery three-semi crash on northbound Interstate -69 early Tuesday morning September 22 2015
One person is dead after a fiery three-semi crash early Tuesday turned a stretch of highway into an unintentional slaughterhouse as injured cattle from one of the rigs had to be put down by police.
The identity of the person who died had not yet been released Tuesday night by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.
The crash occurred about 3:20 a.m. on Interstate 69 just south of Auburn when a northbound semi drove off the east side of the highway, according to the sheriff’s department.
Police said they didn’t know what caused Phenton Hadley, 47, of Gainesville, Florida, to drive off the road.
His semitrailer rolled onto its passenger side and left Hadley in serious condition from his injuries.
A second semi, this one driven by Leonel Rios, 46, of Indianapolis stopped for Hadley’s crash and was rear-ended by the third semi involved, the sheriff’s department said.
Rios’ semi, which was carrying a load of cattle, was forced off the road to the east where it eventually came to rest.
Meanwhile, the third semi involved traveled into the median of the highway and was consumed by fire. The driver was dead when reached by emergency personnel, according to the sheriff’s department.
Rios was not injured, but his load of cattle was doomed.
The sheriff’s department said officers at the scene had to euthanize “a number” of the cattle.
The crash affected traffic in the area for several hours as the wreckage and livestock were removed.
