Fort Myers Beach , FL : Five persons were Hospitalized in Multi Vehicle Crash after Hyundai struck a box truck in front of the Lani Kai Resort on Wednesday , January 14th 2015
Fort Myers Beach, Florida
Deputies say the driver of an SUV that caused a multi-vehicle crash on Fort Myers Beach was having a medical episode at the time of the crash.
The crash, which sent five people to the hospital, happened in the 1400 block of Estero Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.
According to deputies, preliminary investigations show that a red Hyundai Santa Fe was going south on Estero Boulevard at 60 mph. The Hyundai struck a box truck in front of the Lani Kai Resort and overturned in front of the Yo Taco restaurant.
Kristen Garcia works at Yo Taco and witnessed the crash.
"Standing right here, I look up as there's a car flipping in the air coming right at me. I run as fast as I can out of here," said Kristen Garcia.
The Hyundai also struck a pedestrian sign, a concrete pole and several tables before stopping.
"All of the sudden, boom! I thought a bomb somewhere out there. I look over and I just saw the pole go down...dust coming out of the side," said witness Harry Mantos.
Mantos heard the crash and ran over to help.
"Then there's the old man in the seatbelt. He looked like he was in difficulty. I said 'somebody get me a knife,'" said Mantos. "The woman was down in the bottom. Calmed her down."
A total of four vehicles were involved in the crash. Five people were taken to local hospitals. No one suffered from life threatening injuries.
The sheriff's office says no charges will be filed against the driver of the SUV at this time.
"I'm glad no one was out front at our shop because they wouldn't be doing good. We have some angels watching over us, that's for sure," said Garcia
