Traverse City, MI : Man in critical condition following crash near the north edge of Elk Rapids on Saturday, June 18, 2016
A Williamsburg man was sent to Munson Medical Center with serious injuries after his vehicle rolled and crashed through a telephone pole.
The 37-year-old Williamsburg man is in critical condition after Acme Township and Elk Rapids fire and rescue workers extricated him from the wreckage, said Antrim County Undersheriff Dean Pratt.
Dispatchers began fielding calls regarding the man's alleged reckless driving at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. An Elk Rapids Police officer first encountered his vehicle near the north edge of Elk Rapids on U.S. 31 traveling southbound at speeds faster than 100 mph. The officer lost sight of the vehicle and a crash was reported minutes later.
The driver made it through Elk Rapids and attempted to pass two vehicles near a curve near Town Line Road. He lost control of the vehicle, left the road and hit a culvert, flipping the vehicle several times before it crashed into a telephone pole, snapping the pole in half, Pratt said.
Officials continue to work to identify the man.
Pratt said officials closed U.S. 31 between Elk Lake Road and Town Line Road from 5:30 p.m. until about 9 p.m., diverting traffic to Elk Lake Road and Town Line Road.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department and Michigan State Police.
