A 34-year-old man riding in a van was killed when the vehicle rear-ended a disabled tractor trailer on the right shoulder of the 118 Freeway in Porter Ranch, the California Highway Patrol said today.

The crash on the eastbound freeway, just east of Porter Ranch Road, was reported at about 12:15 p.m. Friday, according to the CHP.

A white 2007 Ford van traveling at approximately 60 to 65 mph veered to the right and hit the left rear trailer portion of the tractor trailer combo.

The van rolled over, ejecting the right front passenger. The van then came to a rest on its wheels and the 34-year-old man was in the roadway suffering from major head trauma.

Paramedics rushed the man, who was a resident of La Puente, to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was pronounced dead at 12:54 p.m. Friday, according to the CHP.

The driver of the van declined to be taken to a hospital, Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The name of the victim will be released pending notification of next of kin, according to coroner’s Investigator Joyce Kato.
