TOPPENISH, WA : Three dead in crash on U.S. 97 south of Toppenish on Friday, 31st August 2018

A two-vehicle crash that killed three people and seriously injured two closed U.S. Highway 97 in Yakima County to traffic for the better part of Friday, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The collision involving a van and a semitrailer occurred shortly before 5:50 a.m. about 19 miles south of Toppenish, according to the State Patrol. Two people were taken to the hospital, while three others were dead at the scene, the State Patrol reported.

Mario Gil-Hernandez, 54, of Sacramento, Calif., was driving north in a GMC Savana van when he left the roadway, overcorrected and crossed into the southbound lanes. The van was hit by a semi driven by J.G. Bustamente of Sunnyside. Gil-Hernandez was killed; Bustamente was injured and taken to Astria Sunnyside Hospital, according to the State Patrol.
