A two-car crash in eastern El Paso County caused the death of a woman from Indiana, the Colorado State Patrol said Tuesday.

Both cars were carrying children, but none of the children were injured.

Kathleen Lamendola, 55, from Griffith, Ind., was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a State Patrol release.

She was driving south on Peyton Highway in a 2008 Chevrolet Impala at about 12:30 p.m. when she failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Judge Orr Road, according to the release. The Chevrolet was hit by a 2005 Ford Expedition traveling west on Judge Orr Road.

Both vehicles flew out of the intersection through a barbwire fence and into a field, according to the release. The Chevrolet came to rest on its wheels, but the Ford ended up in a small pond with its front end submerged in water.

Lamendola was wearing a seat belt, and her 2-year-old passenger, William Campbell, was restrained in a child seat. William was uninjured but taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The driver of the Ford, 30-year-old Allison Seel of Calhan, suffered minor injuries. She was wearing a seat belt, and her 1-year-old passenger, Abigail Seel, was in a child seat. Abigail was not injured.

The crash is under investigation, but alcohol and drug use are not being considered as factors.
