Morganton, North Carolina
A Morganton woman was hospitalized with severe injuries after a head-on collision Sunday night.
Eric Swink, 30, of Drexel, was traveling north on Dysartsville Road around 6:45 p.m. when he drove his 2001 Toyota passenger car over the center line on a straightaway and collided with Yer Yang, 57, of Morganton, according to Trooper A. Johnson with N.C. Highway Patrol.
The wreck happened about two miles south of Interstate 40.
Swink left his vehicle to look for help at a nearby house but was standing outside his vehicle when responders arrived,. Johnson said.
Yang, who was driving a 1992 Ford Ranger, was found pinned inside her vehicle with serious injuries, Johnson said.
West End Fire Department responded to the wreck and cut Yang out of her truck, Johnson said. A helicopter was called to transport Yang to a Charlotte hospital, but a storm forced it to turn around.
Yang was sent to a local hospital before being transported to a Charlotte hospital by ambulance, Johnson said.
As of Monday night, no update was given regarding Yang’s condition.
Swink declined medical attention at the scene of the wreck and appeared to have only minor cuts and bruises, Johnson said.
Swink was charged with driving left of center, which is a simple driving infraction, Johnson said. There were no indications of recklessness, speed, impairment or cellphone use, he said.
Burke County EMS and Burke County REACT also responded to the scene. Both cars were totaled, but no other injuries or damage to property were reported, Johnson said.
