San Francisco, CA : Man in Bay Bridge car crash threatens to jump from span; CHP officer intervenes on Wednesday morning September 24th 2014
San Francisco, California
A man who was involved in a car crash Wednesday morning on the Bay Bridge threatened to jump off the span, but a CHP officer was able to talk to the man and prevent him from taking his own life.
The man showed signs of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol and was transported by paramedics to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was put on an emergency psychiatric hold, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol said.
He will be arrested for drunken driving or driving under the influence of drugs after being released from the hospital, said the spokesperson. His name and age were not released.
The incident started about 9:30 a.m. when two vehicles collided in the right lanes of westbound Interstate 80 on the Bay Bridge, west of Treasure Island. For unknown reasons, the man got out of his car and went and stood on a three-inch ledge, threatening to jump.
A CHP officer trained in crisis intervention was sent to the scene and arrived within minutes. He spoke to the man, and officers pulled the man back over the railing after a brief struggle.
No injuries were reported.
Since the new Bay Bridge opened about one year ago, there has been one reported suicide. A man jumped to his death from the westbound side of the Bay Bridge on July 16, marking the first known suicide from the new span.
