Two people were sent to the hospital after a rear-end collision on the interstate in Old Fort, according to reports.

At approximately 11:43 a.m. Friday, emergency units responded to I-40 westbound toward the 75 mile marker after receiving calls about a two-car collision.

Old Fort Fire Department, Old Fort Police Department, McDowell EMS, McDowell Rescue Squad and the N.C. Highway Patrol responded to the call.

According to Trooper Kirk Hensley of the Highway Patrol, a white Ford F-350 pickup truck – driven by 21-year-old Blake Daryl Silver of Nebo – was traveling westbound on I-40 when it rear-ended a box truck – driven by 70-year-old Michael Douglas Zubowski of Louisville, Tenn. – that was stopped for ongoing road construction miles ahead.

Silver, Hensley said, didn’t appear to hit the brakes before the collision.

Despite initial reports of the vehicles catching fire, there were no flames at the time of response.

Silver and a passenger in his truck were taken to McDowell Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with failure to reduce speed, according to Hensley.
