Walnut Creek,CA : 1 dead, 10 injured in fiery big rig crash on April, wednesday 26th 2017
A big rig crossed the center divider into oncoming traffic Tuesday on the 5 Freeway, killing one man and injuring 10 other people in a fiery crash.
Freeway lanes were closed for hours as crews dealt with the charred, mangled and smoking wreckage.
The crash, which involved eight vehicles, happened shortly before 11 a.m., near the 134 Freeway, along the greens of Griffith Park and the L.A. River.
The collision sparked a massive fire, with debris scattered across freeway lanes. Firefighters worked to douse flames from the cars and trucks involved.
“This was a significant, fiery and fatal traffic collision,” said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott.
The identity of the dead man was not known. And it was unclear exactly how the incident happened.
“We don’t have a clear sequence,” said California Highway Patrol spokesman Jose Nunez.
The big rig was traveling north before it crossed the center divider into southbound lanes. It hit a second big rig, and the other vehicles became involved. In all, three passenger vehicles, three big rigs, one passenger van and a black truck were involved. It was not immediately clear what vehicle the dead man was traveling in, Nunez said.
It also was unclear why the first big rig crossed the divider, he said.
