Davenport, FL : 68-year-old motorcycle rider died after struck by car in Polk County on Tuesday night. May 3, 2016
A 68-year-old motorcycle rider died Tuesday night after he was struck by car driven by a man without a driver license, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
David J. Szewczykowski, a retired police officer from the Erie Police Department in Pennsylvania, was flown to the Osceola Regional Medical Center, where he died on arrival, reports said.
Albino Contreras, 55, of 31882 Decker Lane, Lot 12, in Dade City, was heading west on Deen Still Road in a 2005 silver Chevrolet Impala about 6:15 p.m. when he crossed the center line while taking a left-hand curve, reports said.
As he crossed the center line he drove into the path of Szewczykowski, who was riding his 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle, the PCSO said.
The left front of the Impala hit the front of the motorcycle, causing significant damage to both vehicles, reports said.
The force of the collision sent Szewczykowski's motorcycle southeast into a tree and he was thrown from the bike, landing in a swampy area next to the roadway, reports said.
Contreras' Impala slid to a stop about 75 feet to the west along the south shoulder of the road.
After he died, Szewczykowski was taken to the Orange/Osceola Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
He was wearing a helmet and appeared to have been wearing eye protection.
Cantreras, who was wearing a seatbelt, is a Honduran national who doesn't have a Florida driver license, license from any other state or license from Honduras, PCSO said.
He was not significantly injured and was treated at the scene.
