A tow truck driver died Thursday morning after being struck by a minivan while attending to a vehicle on U.S. Highway 190/Interstate 14.
At approximately 6:20 a.m., the wrecker driver was loading a vehicle onto the back of his truck when he was struck by the minivan driving westbound on 190, according to Harker Heights Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Miller.
Miller said the tow truck driver had activated his emergency headlights and was walking from the stalled vehicle back to the truck at the time of the collision.
The force of the collision amputated the man's right leg below the knee.
When ambulances arrived, the man was rushed to Seton Medical Center Harker Heights where he died at 7:09 a.m.
A Bell County justice of the peace pronounced the man dead at 7:59 a.m.
The family of the victim has been notified, Miller said, but police are withholding the man's identity pending notification of other family members.
Miller said the driver of the minivan was not injured in the collision.
Following the incident, Harker Heights police closed the westbound lanes on 190 to thru traffic until approximately 7:30 a.m., Miller said.
Eastbound traffic was also slowed for a short time due to a separate collision potentially caused by rubbernecking, according to Miller.
Harker Heights police are handling the investigation with the aid of the traffic division.
A trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety was on scene offering traffic aid, according to DPS spokesman Sgt. Dave Roberts.
