SYRACUSE, NY : 2 babies seriously injured in crash on I-81 in Syracuse on Tuesday, 24th September 2019
Two babies suffered serious head injuries in a crash Tuesday evening on Interstate 81 southbound in Syracuse, according to New York State Police.
A 1-year-old and a 3-month-old were injured at about 7 p.m. Tuesday in the two-vehicle crash on the highway near the Interstate 481 entrance, Trooper Jack Keller said.
A 2010 Ford driven by Tanya Pierre was traveling south on I-81 at a very slow speed due to heavy traffic conditions when it was hit by a 2014 Dodge, driven by Cody A. Mothersell, Keller said. After being hit, Pierre steered her car to the left to avoid striking a tractor-trailer in front of her, causing her vehicle to strike the guardrail along the east shoulder of the highway.
Both vehicles slid along the guardrail for about 75 feet before coming to rest, Keller said.
Pierre, 24, of Syracuse was not injured in the crash. Two children in car seats in her vehicle were injured. Jeffrey Letson, 1, and Max Letson, 3 months old, were transported to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital with serious head injuries, Keller said.
Jeffrey is in critical condition and Max is in fair condition, a spokesperson for Upstate University Hospital said Thursday afternoon.
