Dover,DE : Fatal car crash west of Georgetown on November, Friday 3rd 2017
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred Friday evening, west of Georgetown.
The preliminary investigation has determined that the incident occurred at around 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, as 50-year-old Jesse Figueroa, of Georgetown, was operating a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle southbound on Warrington Road, approaching the intersection of County Seat Highway (Route 9). A 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 series pickup truck, operated by 48-year-old John H. Scott Jr., of Georgetown, and a 2013 Ram 3500 series dual wheel pickup truck, operated by 62-year-old Ruben Lourenco, of Ellendale, were both westbound on County Seat Highway, approaching the same intersection.
For unknown reasons, Volkswagen failed to stop at the stop sign and continued into the intersection, directly in the path of Scott’s Chevrolet Silverado. In an attempt to avoid the collision, Scott swerved to the left, but his truck was still struck by the Volkswagen and spun out, directly in the path of Lourenco’s Ram truck. Lourenco also attempted to avoid the collision by swerving but was struck by Scott’s truck.
Scott was not properly restrained and was pronounced dead at the scene. Lourenco, who was properly restrained, was taken by EMS to Beebe Medical Center, where he was admitted with minor injuries.
Figueroa fled the scene of the crash on foot but was later located by Delaware State Police in a nearby ditch. He was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, second-degree vehicular assault, driving under the influence of alcohol and other crimes. Figueroa was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $18,300 cash bond.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into the crash. County Seat Highway was closed for about four and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
