ORLAND, CA : 10 dead in Northern California crash on Interstate 5 in Northern Californiaon Thursday, 11th July 2019
Nine people died in a fiery crash on Interstate 5 in Northern California on Thursday when a FedEx semi pulling two trailers collided with a tour bus filled with Southern California high-school students, and both caught fire.
The bus was carrying students from multiple Los Angeles-area high schools to visit Humboldt State University for its spring preview for prospective students on Saturday. The California Highway Patrol said among the dead were the drivers of the FedEx truck and the charter bus. Investigators believe the other seven fatalities were people on the bus, but have not confirmed whether they were students, or which schools they were from.
Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy confirmed Thursday night that some of the students on the bus were from Robert F. Kennedy and Manual Arts high schools in Los Angeles, among other local schools, but he did not know whether they were among the dead or injured. He said the district has sent a team to Northern California to monitor the situation. He added that the students were not on an official LAUSD field trip.
“We were deeply saddened to learn about the tragic accident that took place earlier today near Humboldt State University,” Deasy said in a written statement. “At this time, we do not know how many L.A. Unified students were victims of the crash.
