The 8-year-old fatally injured in a Statesville crash performed one final selfless act after his family agreed to donate the boy’s organs.

David Ray Williams Jr. died from injuries he suffered after a tractor-trailer slammed into the vehicle he was in on July 14.

The boy moved with his family to North Carolina about two months ago, according to his mother, Ashley Peay.

Peay said she didn’t hesitate when doctors asked her if she would like her son to be an organ donor.

“As soon as they asked me, I already knew the answer to it,” Peay said. “Years back, (his) older sister and D.J. were looking at my driver’s license and they saw the heart on it. They asked me what it was for and what it meant. Both of them thought it was the coolest thing in the world.”

The pain didn’t fade in that moment, but Peay said it helped knowing her son’s death would enable others to live on through his organ donations.

N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper K.D. Allred said Daniel Chase Bowlin, 28, was driving a Scion passenger car on July 14 and turned right into the eastbound lanes of the highway from Third Creek Road. David was in the backseat of the car.

Bowlin attempted to make an illegal U-turn to head west, and a tractor-trailer collided with the car.

David was sitting in the left rear seat – the same side the truck hit, according to the crash report.

No one in the Scion was wearing a seat belt, Allred said.

The remaining passengers were transported to the hospital, but all were released within a couple of days, the trooper said.

David died two days later. Bowlin was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to secure a passenger under 16.

David was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi and moved with the rest of the family to Pensacola, Florida, three years ago.

The move to North Carolina came with a major drawback for David, his mother said. He wasn’t particularly interested in school, and much preferred riding his bike through the mud and honing his mechanical skills.
