Memphis, TN: Bystanders rescue motorcyclist trapped underneath car after crash on Friday, July 31st 2015
Two motorcycle riders were fighting for survival Friday night after a nasty multi-vehicle crash at Third Street and Peebles Road. Some said it would have been
certain death for one of them if bystanders had not stepped in."It knocked the lady over the light pole and it knocked the man under the car," said witness Dewayne Whittaker. They said the woman was catapulted from the bike by the impact.“She flew in the air over the light pole, high as the light pole,” said Whittaker. “That's how high she was in the air, and she came down."“She was like, 'help me, help me,'" recalled witness Marcus Tennial.Three or four bystanders from nearby businesses lifted a Cadillac from atop a male motorcycle rider who somehow ended up underneath it."And when we got him from under there, his leg was amputated off and his head was smashed in," said Whittaker. They used a hydraulic jack to remove the car and credited a tire shop's proximity to the crash scene for making the rescue possible.“If it wasn't for them jacking the car up he probably would've been injured more than he was," said Tennial.Witnesses said the crash may have been caused by one of the cars trying to beat a red light. Fortunately, people didn't think twice about lending a hand.“I hope he'll be alright,” said Whittaker. “As long as we keep him in
our prayers it's going to work out for the best."At last check, both victims were still in critical condition. Witnesses said they were traveling from Arkansas with a second motorcyclist who was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
