New Roads, LA : One person dead and eight people injured in a crash at Highway 420 on Wednesday, 31st August, 2016
Louisiana State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that left one person dead and eight people injured in New Roads.
Troopers said the crash happened at roughly 4 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Hwy 10 and Hwy 420. According to LSP, 23-year-old Kelsey Moore, of New Roads, was traveling north on Hwy 420 in a car, while 71-
year-old Robert Smith, of St. Francisville, was heading west on Hwy 10 in a van.
Both drivers were approaching the intersection with Smith having a green light. Troopers say Moore failed to stop for the red light and hit Smith's van in the intersection.
According to Troopers, 16-year-old Shafteanna Williams, of New Roads, was fatally injured in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner's Office. Troopers added that Williams was
unrestrained and sitting in the front passenger seat of Moore's car at the time of the crash.
Officials say Moore's vehicle also had five children in the back seat, ranging from 1 to 6 years old. Moore and the children were unrestrained as well and were taken to the hospital. Troopers said the five juveniles had minor to
moderate injuries, while Moore had moderate injuries.
Both Smith and his passenger were properly restrained and had minor injuries.
State Police does not suspect impairment was a factor in this crash, but said toxicology samples will be taken from both drivers for analysis.
Troopers said once Moore is released from the hospital, she will be charged with negligent homicide, reckless operation, failure to stop for a red signal, negligent injuring, no driver’s license, and multiple counts of child
restraint and seat belt violations.
