Town of Peshtigo, WI : 76-year-old woman killed in a car-versus-ambulance crash on U.S. 41 in Marinette County on Tuesday morning, February 10, 2015
A 76-year-old Peshtigo-area woman and her dog were killed in a crash with an ambulance Tuesday morning.
The State Patrol says the crash on Hwy. 41 between Hwy. T and Flame Rd. happened around 10:45 a.m. Sheriff Jerry Sauve says the woman tried to turn left onto northbound 41 from an access road when the southbound ambulance hit her. The ambulance was carrying three people: the driver, an attendant and a patient. All three were taken to a Marinette hospital; the driver had the most serious injuries.
The ambulance was coming from Delta County, Michigan. Its lights and siren were not on.
The ambulance ended up on a set of railroad tracks next to the highway. A freight train coming through the area had to be stopped so it did not hit the ambulance. The stopped train caused some traffic backups at railroad crossings near the scene.
Traffic on Hwy. 41 was shut down in both directions for several hours. Southbound lanes reopened just before 1:45 and northbound lanes about an hour later.
