Cleveland, OH : Three people killed, driver charged in Cleveland crash early Saturday morning, July 9, 2016
Three people were killed and two others suffered severe head trauma during a crash on the city's Northeast Side early Saturday morning, police said.
Alexandria Winegarner, 17, of Euclid was one of the people who died at the scene of the crash in the 1800 block of Kirby Avenue at 12:13 a.m., according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's website. The others have not been identified.
The driver, 20-year-old, Kareem H. Walton, is charged with three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, and two counts of aggravated vehicle assault, Cleveland police spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said.
Test results are still pending to determine whether Walton was operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.
Walton was driving westbound in a 2006 Pontiac G6 recklessly and well in excess of the 25 mph posted speed limit when he lost control, police said. The car rotated clockwise and four of the passengers were ejected onto the roadway.
The car came to rest heading South near where Kirby turns into Hazeldell Drive.
Three of the passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. Two were taken to University Hospitals.
The victims range in age from 16-20.
Walton suffered soft tissue injuries. No further information was provided about his condition.
It's unknown if anyone in the car was wearing a seat belt.
