Jacksonville, FL : Veteran FSCJ professor killed in Jacksonville crash on Heckscher Drive north of Shad Creek Road on Monday, 10th February, 2020

An 80-year-old Florida State College at Jacksonville professor was killed Monday in a crash on Heckscher Drive north of Shad Creek Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Miriam Folk’s death is bringing memorials and memories from fellow educators at the college, including a statement from Arts and Sciences Dean Jeff Hess.

“Everyone who knew her, knew how passionate she was about her students and their success,” Hess wrote. “She cared deeply for each of them and went out of her way to especially help those students who were in need, whether it be academic, personal, financial or otherwise.”

Folk was turning left out of the parking lot at the Sandollar Restaurant northeast of the St. Johns River Ferry just after 2 p.m. when the crash occurred, the Highway Patrol said. Her Toyota Prius collided with a northbound Ford F-250 pickup truck.

Folks was wearing a seat belt but was declared dead at the scene. Andres Vasquez Lopez, 34, of Green Cove Springs and his three passengers in the pickup, which was pulling a trailer, were not injured, the FHP report said. He was cited with operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver license.
