Oakland, CA : 21-year-old dead after a high-speed car accident on MacArthur Avenue near High Street on Wednesday night, January 20, 2016

A 21-year-old is dead after a high-speed car accident in California late Wednesday night.

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on MacArthur Avenue near High Street, police said.

Officers said the cars were speeding when the car hit a tree on 35th Avenue, according to police.

A passenger, 20-year-old Elijah Mayo, miraculously walked away without injuries, he told KRON.

Mayo told Harper that the victim is 21-year-old Jameil Brown who was driving when he lost control of car. Brown was ejected from the car and killed.

The force from the crash split the car in half and scattered debris all over the street.

MacArthur Avenue is closed between Maybelle Avenue and High Street is closed due to the police investigation. There is no estimated time when the streets will reopen.

It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

Oakland Police Department is at the scene investigating. They plan on using surveillance video from shops along the street to piece together what happened.
