An 83-year-old man died and his grandson suffered broken bones after a driver crashed into a bus stop in front of the Disston Plaza shopping center Sunday afternoon, police reported.
Santiago Carcamo died later at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, while Gabriel Oliva, 35, is expected to recover from his injuries.
About 12:50 p.m., Louise Pequeno, 78, left the shopping center, driving north on 49th Street N, according to a St. Petersburg Police Department release. As she turned, an SUV struck her vehicle, according to the agency, causing Pequeno to swerve into the bus stop bench, where Carcamo and Oliva were sitting.
Police closed 49th Street between 34th 38th avenues N after the crash, but the road had opened by Sunday evening. The agency is still seeking the driver of the light-colored SUV that hit Pequeno’s vehicle.
