A Hale woman died in a Friday afternoon traffic crash east of Monroe City.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 1997 Ford van driven by Tanya M. Woody, 32, of Hale, was traveling westbound on U.S. 36, three miles east of Monroe City, at 2:08 p.m. when it struck the rear of a 2005 Freightliner tractor trailer driven by Juan M. Chavez, 49, of Racine, Wis. The van caught fire, becoming engulfed in flames.
Hale was pronounced dead at the scene by Ralls County Coroner Denise Goodwin at 3:20 p.m. She was taken to Smith Funeral Home in Hannibal.
The crash closed U.S. 36 for a time, then traffic was narrowed to one lane before the highway reopened Friday night.
The patrol was assisted by the Ralls County Sheriff's Department, Monroe City Police Department, Monroe City Ambulance and Monroe City Fire Department.
