Pomona, CA : 2 dead in fiery, wrong-way I-95 crash on Friday, 21st June 2019

Two people are dead following a fiery wrong-way crash early Friday on southbound Interstate 95 in Mandarin that forced the highway to be shut down for all of the morning rush hour, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Mary Elizabeth Russ, 23, of St. Augustine and a second victim who has not been named were killed just before 3 a.m. on the interstate a half mile north of Old St. Augustine Road, the Highway Patrol said.

Russ was driving a Ford Escape in the wrong direction when she hit another vehicle head-on, according to the crash report. The unidentified driver’s vehicle instantly engulfed in flames. The Escape overturned onto its roof, and the burning vehicle flipped over.

It took highway crews almost 10 hours to repair the two fire-damaged interstate roadway, forcing the Highway Patrol to shut down three of four lanes until just after 1 p.m.
