SOUTH BEND, IN : Woman who left fatal accident faces felony charge on Tuesday, August 29, 2017

A South Bend woman has been charged with leaving the scene of Tuesday's fatal accident at O'Brien Street and Vassar Avenue that killed 6-year-old Maliyah Davis.

Reka E. Phillips, 26, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Law enforcement said she is still at large, and officials are asking her to turn herself in.

Maliyah died as a result of a crash about 2:40 p.m. Tuesday when an eastbound Dodge Durango and a southbound Chrysler 300 collided at Vassar and O'Brien.

She was a passenger in the Durango. The woman driver of the Durango and another child passenger were not hurt in the accident. Phillips was driving the Chrysler, which officials said Wednesday is owned by an acquaintance of Phillips.

Witnesses told police Tuesday that the driver of the Chrysler had stopped the car after the accident, walked with another person to see the damage and then left the area without speaking to police.

St. Joseph County Prosecutor Ken Cotter announced the charge Wednesday, saying that Phillips currently is charged only with leaving the accident scene.
