A 28-year-old Milwaukee man was killed Monday morning, New Year's Day, in a rollover crash on Interstate 43 that closed the southbound lanes for several hours, officials said.
Jose Ortiz-Hernandez was the sole occupant of the vehicle that crashed just south of West Silver Spring Drive shortly before 2 a.m., a statement from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said.
Another driver told authorities that Ortiz-Hernandez hit the median wall, crossed all lanes of traffic and then rolled over and went off the road and 30 feet up into an embankment into trees, the statement said.
Ortiz-Hernandez was not wearing a seatbelt, officials said.
An off-duty Greenfield police officer who stopped after seeing the vehicle began CPR until deputies, Glendale police officers and paramedics from the Northshore Fire Department arrived.
Ortiz-Hernandez was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m. The roadway opened to traffic at 6 a.m.
