New Florence, Pennsylvania
Two men died when one rear-ended the vehicle of another before crashing head-on into a tractor trailer on U.S. Route 22 in western Pennsylvania.
The Indiana County coroner says 30-year-old Matthew Hess, of Girard, and 56-year-old Richard Lowers Jr., of New Florence, died at the scene Sunday.
Both men were driving east before 9 p.m. in West Wheatfield Township, which is near New Florence and about 50 miles east of Pittsburgh. Hess' vehicle rear-ended Lowers' as he was turning off the highway.
The impact sent Hess' vehicle into the westbound lanes, where his vehicle hit the truck. All three vehicles burst into flames, closing the highway for hours.
The tractor-trailer driver was taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center and was expected to survive. The others died at the scene.
