Holly Springs , GA : One man was died in a crash at Pulliam Mill Road and Highway 172 On Monday, April 25th, 2016
An Elbert County man died Monday morning shortly after the vehicle he was driving slammed into a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck at the Holly Springs intersection where Pulliam Mill Road and Highway 172 meet near the Hart County line.
According to the Georgia State Patrol’s Matt Baxley, the accident resulted from a driver who ran through a stop sign.
According to Baxley, Gary C. Lunsford, 55, of 1470 Old Middleton Road, drove his vehicle through the stop sign as he entered the Holly Springs intersection.
Lunsford’s vehicle struck a trailer being pulled by a Chevrolet pickup truck being driven west on Highway 172 by Michael Pierce of Hart County, said Baxley.
Neither Pierce nor two passengers in his vehicle were injured in the incident, according to Baxley.
Elbert County Emergency Services received a call about the accident at 10:27 a.m., according to Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond.
Almond said Lunsford was life-flighted by helicopter to a hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, where Lunsford was later pronounced dead.
According to Almond, when Lunsford was transported from the scene in Elbert County he “needed immediate surgery.”
The life-flight helicopter that transported Lunsford to the South Carolina hospital landed in the middle of Highway 172, said Almond.
The highway was shut down about an hour, said Almond.
