Bellevue, WA : Man killed when car crashes through fence, plunges into retention pond in Newcastle on Sunday morning, August 21, 2016
A 57-year-old man died Sunday morning in Newcastle when his car left the roadway and flipped upside down in a retention pond, according to fire officials.
Bellevue firefighters dived into 4-foot deep water to reach the man, but he could not be revived, said Lt. Ryan Armstrong of the Bellevue Fire Department.
Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Houck said the victim was from Newcastle. His name was not immediately released.
A neighbor who heard a crash called 911 at 9:04 a.m. to report a car breaking through a chain-link fence and plunging 30 feet below to the storm-water holding basin. The car was submerged in water, with just the wheels showing, Armstrong said. The crash occurred at 150th Southeast and 80th Street.
Bellevue firefighters, who provide coverage to neighboring Newcastle, arrived six minutes later, but were unable to reach the driver and remove his body until 9:36, Armstrong said.
King County sheriff’s deputies were investigating the crash. No other passengers were found.
