Delray Beach, FL : Officers in mourning after retired Trenton police lieutenant killed in motorcycle crash in Tennessee on Tuesday, 9th August 2016
Police officers in two departments are in mourning after a motorcycle accident in Tennessee claimed the life of a retired Trenton police lieutenant.
Mike Topping, 58, died Tuesday after suffering injuries from a motorcycle crash on Aug. 7 that occurred while on the way to his home in Delray Beach, Fla.
Topping had been in Michigan for a class reunion and was picking up his motorcycle here in Michigan, according to police.
News of his death has stunned many Downriver, including Trenton Director of Police and Fire Services James Nardone.
Clearly a bit shaken, Nardone said Topping was at the Police Department visiting officers Aug. 6 and he had a chance to speak to him then.
He said he and Topping worked together for more than 20 years and the news came as a blow to him and others within the department who knew him.
Nardone did not want to talk about Topping’s death, but stressed that he was a dedicated public servant and said losing him is a “tragic loss” to the department.
Topping served on the force for 24 years and he retired in November 2014.
The details of the crash are unclear, but it does not appear that any other vehicles were involved.
According to a Facebook post by his niece, Bridgette McClure, Topping was an organ donor and was able to save at least three lives by donating his organs.
