Mobile, AL : South Alabama student died after a multi-vehicle crash on Monday, July 13, 2015
University of South Alabama nursing student Jaimie Witcraft was killed in a car accident on her way to see her boyfriend for the July 4 weekend.
Witcraft was on the phone with her mother, sitting in traffic, when she was crashed into by an 18-wheeler.
A crowd of more than 40 people waited in the waiting room at the hospital to hear about her condition, only to hear the words no parent ever wants to.
With her death, Witcraft left a void in the lives of many, but even in death, her giving spirit lived on.
Witcraft had previously elected to become an organ donor, and her wish was honored, saving more lives.
On Thursday, students, faculty and family are invited to a vigil in her honor at The University of South Alabama's Moulton Bell tower.
The vigil will begin at dusk, around 7:30 p.m.
Witcraft was also a member of the Air Force ROTC and will receive a military ceremony in her honor.
Faculty members Theresa Wright and Deborah Swanzi organized the vigil as a benefit to the community to students and staff who could not attend Witcraft's funeral in Texas.
"The reason we wanted to host the vigil is that we have a student body here where the students are very close in nursing school," said Wright. "The students work in groups and become very close."
In addition to her hard work as a nursing student, she devoted countless hours to ROTC on top of her tough academic schedule.
"She's deserving of our honor. She was a very good student," said Wright.
Candles will be provided and the Catholic Student Association's Fr. Travis Burnett will speak.
