ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO : A woman was killed and a child seriously injured after they were both ejected from a car in a crash on Wednesday, July 5, 2017

A woman was killed and a child seriously injured after they were both ejected from a car in a crash that shut down westbound Interstate 44 near Six Flags St. Louis Wednesday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said that Elizabeth Venecia, 39, from Aurora, Ill., died after she was thrown from the front passenger seat and then hit by another car. She died at the scene.

Police said the SUV that Venecia's relative was driving was traveling too fast when it struck the guardrail, ejecting both Venecia and an 11-year-old boy. The 2002 Isuzu Rodeo then drove off the road and struck a concrete barrier. The crash happened around 2:15 p.m.

Venecia was not wearing a set belt; the boy was.

Drivers were routed to a detour before the westbound lanes of the interstate reopened about 3 hours later.
