Arizona Sen. Steve Pierce's son has died from injuries received earlier this week in a car accident in Phoenix, according to Rep. Karen Fann.

Steve Pierce II was in a serious car accident Wednesday evening, March 18, and was admitted to John C. Lincoln hospital.

The 37-year-old computer business owner from Phoenix suffered a head injury, ruptured spleen and broken pelvis, Sen. Pierce said Thursday.

His father also said Thursday that his son would be in a medically-induced coma for an unknown period of time.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m., a silver Kia Rio was southbound on North 22nd Street and failed to yield from a stop sign while making a left turn onto Union Hills. The vehicle was struck by a 2015 Volkswagon Passat, which was westbound on Union Hills Drive.

Pierce was the driver of Kia and was transported to John C. Lincoln and admitted for his injuries.

Sen. Andy Biggs extended these condolences:

"The State Senate is mourning this afternoon after the death of one of our Senate family members. Steve Pierce, the adult son of Senator Steve Pierce, has passed away from injuries suffered in a Wednesday evening car crash.

This is heartbreaking for all of us. For any challenges we may have here at the Capitol, the passing of a family member puts things into perspective.

Cindy and I send our condolences to Steve's wife, his mother Joan and father Steve, their family and all of Steve's friends. He will be missed by many and will be in our thoughts and prayers."
