Baton Rouge, LA : 13-year-old girl from McComb, Miss., killed in crash near Franklinton on April, Saturday 8th 2017

A 13-year old girl from Mississippi was killed in a car crash Saturday morning (April 8) just north of Franklinton, according to Louisiana State Police. The fatal crash happened at the intersection of Louisiana 25 and Louisiana 38.

The crash killed Madison Nicholson, 13, of McComb, Miss., who was sitting in a 2005 GMC Sierra approaching the intersection when a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer slammed into the Sierra's passenger side. Nicholson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police spokesman Trooper Dustin Dwight.

According to a news release, the Sierra -- driven by Reagan Ballard Magee, 21, also of McComb -- was heading south on La. 25 as it neared La. 38. At the same time, the Trailblazer -- driven by Melinda Felker Collette, 47, of Kentwood -- was traveling east on La. 38 and headed for the intersection.

"For reasons still under investigation," state police said, "Collete failed to stop at the intersection."

The Trailblazer's front then slammed into the passenger side of the Sierra, gravely wounding Nicholson. An unidentified juvenile passenger in the Trailblazer's front seat, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle's rear lift-gate and suffered "moderate injuries." She was taken to North Oaks Health Systems.

The drivers, Collette and Magee, were also taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. They were both wearing seat belts.

Collete was cited for failing to stop at the intersection. Any additional charges will be referred to the 22nd Judicial Court, authorities said.

An investigation is ongoing.

Authorities do not suspect intoxication on the part of either driver. Both had their blood drawn, which will be submitted to state police's crime lab for testing.

La. 38, on which Collette was driving, is controlled by flashing red lights at a stop sign at that intersection. La. 25 is controlled by a flashing yellow signal, State Police said.
