Methuen , MA : One person dead after multi-car accident on I-495 south in Methuen on Thursday,July 2nd 2015

One person is dead after a multi-car accident on I-495 south in Methuen Thursday, according to Massachusetts State Police.

State troopers responded to the crash at about 5:36 p.m. One person, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several others involved were transported to area hospitals, police said. Three cars were involved, but the number of people injured and the nature of their injuries were not disclosed.

The crash brought traffic to a standstill. After police arrived on the scene, they diverted traffic off of I-495 at exit 47 onto Route 213 west. The ramp from Route 213 east to I-495 south was also closed.

Police said they are still investigating the cause of the crash, with help from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and troopers assigned to the Essex County District Attorney's office.

Members of the Methuen police, fire and EMS departments, as well as members of the state Department of Transportation, also responded at the scene.
