Wausau, WI : Wausau squad car hit in U.S. 51 crash on Friday afternoon, February 24, 2017

A Wausau police officer and a passenger in his squad car sustained minor injuries Friday afternoon after the vehicle they were in was rear-ended by another vehicle.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Friday in the northbound lanes of U.S. 51 north of Bridge Street, said Wausau Police Department Lt. Andrew Hartwig. The officer was responding to another traffic crash. He was signaling and slowing down to make a U-turn in a median turnaround when the second vehicle crashed into the squad car.

The passenger in the squad car was sitting in the front passenger seat and participating in a ride-along, Hartwig said. Both the officer and passenger were taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital as a precautionary measure and were released. Their injuries were "very minor," Hartwig said. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

The Marathon County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash, Hartwig said.
