Raleigh, N.C : Boy hit by car while waiting for school bus in Wake Forest Tuesday morning, September 20, 2016
Wake Forest, North Carolina
An 11-year-old waiting at his bus stop suffered a fractured knee when he was hit by a vehicle in Wake Forest Tuesday morning. A 16-year-old from Raleigh has been charged in connection with the crash, police said.
Henry Cruz, who attends Rolesville Middle School, was standing at the stop with a friend at Casine Court and Louisburg Road when he was hit.
School officials with the Wake County Public School System said changes to the bus stop are expected to be made Wednesday afternoon.
Jordan Nobles, 16, a Rolesville High student is charged with exceeding the posted speed and improper passing, according to the State Highway Patrol.
A Honda Accord was traveling northbound on Louisburg Road and attempted to pass a line of cars by using the right turning lane, officials said.
When the driver ran out of road, they overcorrected and hit Cruz as he was waiting for the bus.
“The car actually hit both my feet as I was trying to get away from the car,” Cruz said.
The Accord ended up in a ditch.
“I heard my mom yelling and I said, ‘I’m OK, I’m OK’ then I fell down because I couldn’t stand on my feet,” Cruz said.
Cruz’ left knee was fractured during the collision and he lost a tooth when he hit the ground.
He said the driver of the car was distraught.
“The guy in the car came out and said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I can’t remember much of it,'” Cruz said.
Neighbors said they’ve expressed concerns to Wake County Schools about the location of the bus stop for a decade or more.
“It was just a matter of time,” Leslie Archambault-Shaw said. “You have a six-lane highway…55 miles an hour. People use that turning lane as a passing lane. You run the statistics, it was just a matter of time before a child go hit.”
April Holmes is also concerned about her children’s safety at that bus stop.
“I have three children who use this bus stop and it’s been a concern. I’ve been here 10 years,” Holmes said. “We been fighting to get this bus stop moved into the neighborhood.”
A spokesperson is working on getting CBS North Carolina more specific information about this stop.
