Licking, MO : Kelcie Hayes, 17, died in a one-car crash in Texas County on Saturday, Oct 31, 2015
An 18-year-old Licking man was arrested for involuntary vehicular manslaughter following his involvement in a fatal crash that killed a teenager from Licking in Texas County on Halloween.
Kelsie M. Hayes, 17, died in the crash that occurred on State Route BB, 5 miles southwest of Licking around 4:50 p.m. Saturday, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The initial patrol report states that Hayes was a passenger in a 1993 Mazda MX3 driven by Austin W. Diedrich.
The eastbound vehicle ran off the road while in a curve and overturned several times before striking a tree and coming to a rest on its driver’s side. The Mazda was totaled.
The patrol states that Hayes was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported to Texas County Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead by a doctor around 5:52 p.m.
Neither Diedrich nor Hayes was wearing a seat belt, according to the patrol.
Diedrich was arrested for felony involuntary manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving resulting in an accident, failure to comply with an intermediate license and no seat belt.
He was placed on a 24-hour hold in the Texas County Jail.
On Oct. 6, Diedrich was given traffic tickets by the Edgar?Springs Police Department for expired plates and operating a motor vehicle without financial responsibility, according to online court records.
He is due in Phelps County Circuit Court for those tickets Wednesday.
