Salt Lake City, UT : Woman in critical condition after wrong-way crash on I-15 off-ramp in Lehi on Friday, 4th November 2016
A woman is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries after going the wrong way on an Interstate 15 off-ramp Friday morning.
According to authorities with the Utah Highway Patrol, at about 7:35 a.m., a woman in a Nissan Rogue drove the wrong way on the northbound off-ramp of Interstate 15 exit 284 in Lehi.
The woman first hit a car near the bottom of the off-ramp in a minor collision. According to James Wright with UHP, the man in the second car got out of his car and tried to talk to the woman, but she just looked at the man and accelerated rapidly up the off-ramp. Police say the woman then collided head-on with a semitrailer in the gore area of the freeway, where lanes diverge to start the off-ramp.
Evan Kirby with UHP said the woman was transported to Intermountain Healthcare Center in Murray in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Erin Spillane, the semitrailer driver, said the crash was unavoidable. There was traffic on his left and a median on his right; all he could do was slow down.
"I just hope she's all right, that's all I care about," Spillane said. Spillane did not sustain injuries in the incident.
No other parties involved reported significant injuries.
Police have not determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Traffic was backed up to the American Fork Main Street exit of I-15, but all lanes were clear by 9:30 a.m.
