Jackson, MS : Father, son die when rear-ended Jeep flips off I-55 overpass on Saturday afternoon, June 20, 2015
Just one day before Father's Day, a father and son were killed Saturday afternoon, when the Jeep they were traveling in was forced off the I-55 overpass by an alleged drunk driver.
JPD Officer Colendula Green identified the victims as 63-year-old Robert Sims and son, 27-year-old Randall Sims of Edwardsville, IL. They both died at the scene of the accident.
Officer Green said a white vehicle, driven by 47-year-old Yolanda McNeely of Ridgeland, was traveling south bound when it clipped the Jeep and kept going.
Authorities said McNeely appeared to be intoxicated and was apprehended in the downtown Jackson area.
The silver Jeep the victims were traveling in was headed south bound on I-55 when it was forced over the side, hit the railing, then crashed onto the I-55/Woodrow Wilson entrance ramp.
An MDOT alert said the I-55 north and south entrance ramps were blocked from Woodrow Wilson.
The accident happened sometime before 3 p.m. in the afternoon.
Green said McNeely is being charged with two counts of aggravated DUI and felony fleeing, leaving the scene.
