Waldo, FL : Bicyclist dies in Waldo Road crash on Thursday, 30th January, 2020

A woman on a bicycle was hit and killed Thursday night on Waldo Road by a motorist who fled the scene, the Gainesville Police Department reported.

Police were called by a passerby who first saw shoes on the road, and then saw the woman on the side of the road, GPD Chief Inspector Jorge Campos said Friday.

“There are no other call notes that indicate anyone called in who witnessed it,” Campos said. “We do not have a vehicle description.”

The incident happened about 8:30 p.m. at 300 Waldo Road. The bicyclist was found on the northbound side of the road.

Campos said specific details about the crash were not available. It was not known if she was riding northbound, riding against traffic or crossing Waldo when she was struck.

The bicyclist was found unconscious and was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital with serious injuries. GPD reported Friday afternoon that she had died.

Traffic homicide investigators were at the scene Thursday night and are continuing to try to gather more information about the crash, Campos said.
