A Blountville father and son have been identified as the victims of the April 29 crash on Interstate 81 that involved six vehicles and a fire, troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol report.
John Robert “Johnny” Doran, 50, and son Jason Doran, 22, were the occupants of a 1998 Chevrolet S10 that was struck from behind by a sport utility vehicle after traffic had slowed due to an earlier vehicle fire, according to the report released last Thursday.
The elder Doran was formerly a mechanic for the Sullivan County Highway Department and served with the Piney Flats Volunteer Fire Department for years. His son, who was driving at the time of the accident, was a truck driver for Pam Transport.
Funeral services for both were held yesterday in Bristol.
Lisa R. Pope Reed, 23, 1035 Fowlers Ridge Road, Newport, is charged with DUI and two counts of vehicular homicide in connection with the 11:41 p.m. accident near mile marker four.
According to the THP report, northbound traffic was restricted to one lane due to an earlier truck fire near mile marker six. Reed’s 2005 Mercedes G50 struck the rear of the Dorans’ truck, which had stopped due to traffic. The pick-up caught on fire and was shoved into a 2003 Honda CRV driven by Dwight Hutson, 66, of Church Hill. Hutson’s vehicle was pushed into the median, and the Dorans’ continued on, striking a 2011 Nissan, driven by Carolyn Shanks, 57, of Mooresburg, in the rear.
The impact caused Shanks’ vehicle to strike a tanker truck, driven by Kennan Warner, 56, of Cleveland, in the rear. Meanwhile, the burning pick-up came to rest against a Volvo tractor trailer, causing it to also catch fire.
Reed, Hutson, and a passenger in Hutson’s car, Gladys Hutson, 65, were injured, the report states.
